Enugu State is located in the South East geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The state capital, Enugu, was built around the coal mining industry established by the British in 1909, earning it the nickname 'Coal City.' Enugu was the capital of the former Eastern Region and the declared capital of the short-lived Republic of Biafra (1967–1970). Today, the city is a major commercial and educational hub in the South East, with a growing service and healthcare sector.
