Borno State is the largest state in Nigeria by land area, located in the North East geopolitical zone and sharing borders with Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. The state is the centre of the ancient Kanem-Bornu Empire, one of the greatest empires in sub-Saharan Africa, which flourished from the 9th to the 19th century. Maiduguri, the state capital, is an important commercial and academic city. Despite security challenges from insurgency in recent decades, the state continues to rebuild under determined leadership.
